Sports and cultural activities form a key part of the broad and balanced curriculum we offer at BMC.
Blue Mountain College has a proud sporting tradition that would be the envy of many much larger schools. We co-operate closely with the local clubs for many sports (e.g. rugby, netball, tennis, soccer and cricket) to ensure that there is a viable competition in the district for young people. Our teams compete with success in a range of competitions and a significant number of our students gain representative honours.
Each year we run a range of school-wide events such as athletics, cross-country and swimming. We participate in inter-school exchanges and many teams and individuals compete with distinction in a number of major tournaments at provincial, regional, south island or even national level.
Each week we have a sports period where students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports. In 2008 there were over two dozen different sports and activities offered at various times. One of the aims of this programme is to introduce students to a range of sports they may not otherwise have the chance to try.
From time to time we are fortunate in being able to have school teams compete overseas. In 2000 our 1st XV travelled to South Africa, in 2002 we had a range of sports teams competing in the Southern Skies Tournament in Brisbane. We were visited by Corfe Hills High from England in 2003 and 2007. In 2005 our 1st XV toured the UK, which included visiting and playing against Corfe Hills. In 2008 we hosted Cranleigh School from England. Australia has also been a recent destination for the 1st XV in 2007 and a Sports Tour to Cairns in 2009, 2012 and 2015.
